But that date came and went and the film was nowhere to be seen on the big screen. But today Anchor Bay Films announced via press release that they would distribute the action-packed fighting frenzy of a film for a wide release sometime in 2011. Though no specific month or even season is mentioned as a potential release date, this is at least official confirmation that the film won't be stuck in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart (at least not for awhile).
Tekken set in a world run by all-powerful corporations, of which the mightiest is the Tekken Corporation, headed by Heiachi Mishima. For a couple of years we've been hearing about another collaboration between Robert De Niro and director Martin Scorsese with The Irishman, a film about Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran, a reputed criminal who has carried out more than 25 mob murders. Scorsese is currently working on The Invention of Hugo Cabret, but there's been talk that this could be his next project after that. Now even better news comes from Deadline who reports Al Pacino and three-time Scorsese collaborator Joe Pesci are circling the project.
De Niro has talked about the potential for two films coming out of the source material book I Heard You Paint Houses, but it's unclear if that idea (which came from Forrest Gump writer Eric Roth) will actually happen. But it did break other records. First it set the midnight record earning some $26.3 million on Thursday night and it also set the biggest Friday one-day box office record, raking in some $72.7 million on that day alone. But then all the Twihards decided to get some sleep and it died off to settle in 3rd place just below two other big blockbusters for the weekend overall. Phew! Years ago, no one thought comic book adaptations would become the mainstream mega-hits that they are today. And to show us the history and evolution of that genre, we've got another great graph to feature today called The Evolution of the Superhero Movie. This comes from the guys who made the Sequels That Bombed, $400 Million Club, and Harry Potter Directors graphics previously. This is one of my all-time favorites though, just because it's dealing with an area of cinema that I'm very familiar with. And so with that, check this out fullsize below.

This graphic originally comes from KoldCast TV, although I was given permission by the creators to run it here. Now he's back with his second movie, Ninja Asssassin, and it's awesome (I've seen it a few times and love it). A few months back, Warner Bros invited me to interview McTeigue while he was in Austin at Fantastic Fest. In promotion of the release next week, here's my interview with James, which went incredibly well.
Watch my video interview with Ninja Assassin director James McTeigue:

I've been a big fan of McTeigue ever since I first saw V for Vendetta (which is one of my all-time favorite movies) and have been excited to talk to him for a long ...

Watch This: Flashy Full-Length Season of the Witch Trailer

Lionsgate has debuted the full-length trailer for Season of the Witch starring Nic Cage and Ron Perlman on Fandango today. We previously featured a very short teaser trailer for this back during Halloween. If it weren't for Cage being so damn cheesy, I would say this actually looks pretty damn cool. I mean, its got Ron Perlman and it's about a witch who summons evil to attack this group of guys trying to transport her across Europe. It looks pretty badass, like some good, dark cinematic entertainment, let's just hope it holds up and Cage doesn't ruin it. I'm not sure I have faith in Dominic Sena yet, but we'll find out in March. Take a look!
Watch the first teaser trailer for Season of the Witch:
[flv:http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/seasonofthewitch-full-trailer.flv http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/seasonofthewitch-full-trailer.jpg 598 336]
You can also watch the Season of the Witch trailer in High Definition on Fandango
A 14th century knight (Nicolas Cage) transports a ...

Michael Bay Promises Megan Fox Will Be Back in Transformers 3

Yes, I know you're trying to forget about Transformers 2, and this isn't helping. If you followed the big back-n-forth between Michael Bay and Megan Fox earlier this year, you might've been left wondering if she would actually return, considering it seemed the two were not on good terms. However, Bay talked to USA Today at the recent Victoria's Secret show (he directed some of their commercials) and he's not mad at her after all. "I love her," Bay said. "It's just, she's young. However, don't write this off so quickly, it also stars Pierce Brosnan, Chris Cooper, and Emilie de Ravin as the love interest. And honestly, this was looking really good until all of the cheesy lines like: "I'm undecided." "About what?" "Everything..." I think the father-son story will be a lot more interesting than the love story, but you never know, it could be a good movie overall. A few weeks ago I met up with producer Alan Polsky (seen to the left with Herzog) at a lunch joint in Beverly Hills to talk about how he got into the business (Alan and his brother Gabe recently started producing) and how this version of Bad Lieutenant got made with such heavyweights as Nicolas Cage and Werner Herzog. Not only is the Bad Lieutenant story great to hear, but he's got big aspirations for the future. So read on!
And before we start, I saw Herzog's Bad Lieutenant at Telluride (read my review) and absolutely loved it. Up until this point, we haven't really known what this would be like, what would happen in it and what the story would be. But this trailer finally gives us a glimpse of all that and I've got to say I'm a little more than curious now. In fact, I'm actually very impressed, this looks great, I'm totally in. The effects look good, even though they're probably far from being done, and the story looks pretty entertaining. First, Richard Linklater's very next project, Liars (A to E), has been canned, the first victim of Miramax's downsizing. Back in early October, the indie studio was forced to cut most of their employees and reduce the number of films they put out to only three or so per year. Movieline reports today that Liars (A to E), about a newly single girl who takes a roadtrip to Obama's inauguration, which was supposed to be next from the studio, is no longer happening. "It didn't really work out. It's tough," Linklater told them. I'm looking forward to this not necessarily because Angelina Jolie is in it, but rather because there's so much mystery to it and the story. "Who is Salt?" is the tagline they're using in this marketing campaign and I like that they're trying to build up as much mystery and intrigue as possible. If you're not familiar with McCarthy, he's the author who wrote the novels that were turned into All the Pretty Horses, No Country for Old Men, and now The Road. Blood Meridian is a critically acclaimed novel, set in the 1850s, about American mercenaries hunting Indians in the Mexican borderland. McCarthy recently talked with the Wall Street Journal (it's actually a fantastic interview) and was asked about why people think Blood Meridian is unfilmable. And his answer might surprise you.
WSJ: People have said "Blood Meridian" is unfilmable because of the sheer darkness and violence of the story.
CM: That's all crap. The fact that's it's a bleak and bloody story has nothing to do with whether or not you can put it on the screen. That's not the issue. Shake Hands with the Devil first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival way back in 2007. In fact, director Roger Spottiswoode actually directed another film (The Children of Huang Shi) while waiting for this to be released. Regent Releasing is finally bringing Shake Hands with the Devil to theaters in 2010 and has debuted a trailer for it on Apple. I'm featuring it for a few reasons. First, while some of the dialogue looks rough, the story looks incredible. Second, the cinematography and locations look gorgeous as well. It stars Roy Dupuis and Deborah Unger.
Watch the trailer for Roger Spottiswoode's Shake Hands with the Devil:
[flv:http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/shakehandswiththedevil-trailer.flv http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/shakehandswiththedevil-trailer.jpg 598 248]
You can also watch the Shake Hands with the Devil trailer in High Definition on Apple
The story follows Emma, a journalist, as well as the personal journey ...

Check This Out: Official Poster for Jeff Bridges' Crazy Heart

Seen below is Fox Searchlight's official poster for Crazy Heart from the LA Times. The trailer arrives on Monday, but I thought I'd feature this anyway. If you haven't heard yet, Crazy Heart is the latest big Oscar contender, and it already has a lot of support. Jeff Bridges plays a broken-down, hard-living country music singer in a kind of Wrestler-like story. Apparently it's a "performance of a lifetime" from Bridges with critics like Kris Tapley of In Contention and Jeffrey Wells supporting him. "Jeff Bridges is definitely in the Best Actor derby... The studio has finally made announcements that indicate that they are actually going up for sale. Variety and Nikki Finke confirmed the news. "MGM also said today it is beginning a process to explore various strategic alternatives including operating as a standalone entity, forming strategic partnerships and evaluating a potential sale of the Company." It looks like it's the end of an era for MGM once and for all. So will The Hobbit be caught in crossfire, too? Say what you will, but my favorite Emmerich film is still Independence Day from 1996, and most people I know agree with me. So how about a sequel? Well, we reported in October that Emmerich has been developing one, but that it probably wasn't going to happen. However, MTV has a new interview with Emmerich and he seems much more enthusiastic, even revealing that the story would span two movies.
"What we want to do in the next â€" it's actually two movies â€" we want to do a bigger arc," he explained to MTV. "Independence Day was always like the king who leads his troops into battle against an evil force, and that stays like that." ...

Fantastic Mr. Fox Has Universal Acclaim from Critics So Far!

Inspired by this amusing post on Awards Daily titled "How to Build a Sturdy Foxhole", I thought I'd point out that Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr. Fox, which hits limited theaters (in New York and Los Angeles) this weekend before expanding on Thanksgiving, is getting positive reviews. Over on Metacritic, Fantastic Mr. Fox currently has a score of 87, which earns it the "universal acclaim" tag. Here's an excerpt:
I created a comedic, lovable loser who lives in Manhattan and works at a real estate company and heÂ's not very good at his job but heÂ's great at playing Monopoly. But I can kick your ass." Yesterday evening the teaser trailer for Kick-Ass hit the web, finally introducing everyone to Mark Millar's awesome comic book "super" hero. In addition to that trailer, a new poster has popped up on MySpace, a one-off teaser poster not like the four connected ones we featured last week. As you can tell, Lionsgate is obviously going with the spray paint motif in their marketing campaign for Kick-Ass, as it was used heavily in the trailer and now it's part of the logo on this poster. Whereas Zemeckis used to be an amazing filmmaker, he's now become our bi-yearly deliverer of a fantastical 3D CGI version of some beloved holiday story. First it was The Polar Express, this year it's A Christmas Carol, so what's up next after that? Pajiba claims that Zemeckis will eventually be adapting The Nutcracker as well, but it's not clear if that'll come before or after he remakes The Beatles' Yellow Submarine. Whatever the case, I'm not excited, despite my love for these wonderful holiday stories.
They also say that similar to A Christmas Carol (which was a direct adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel), Zemeckis' Nutcracker won't be an adaptation of the Tchaikovsky ballet, but rather an adaptation of E.T.A. It's a short 'n sweet new trailer with most of the footage we've seen before in either of the first two trailers. But since Up in the Air deserves some more love and since this trailer has great quotes from various critics, it's worth featuring anyway. I hope everyone is planning to see this when it hits theaters in December, it's easily one of the best films of the year. And if all goes well, it might end up winning some Oscars, too. However, Sgt. Rock will be lifted from the period fight in World War II into the future to avoid feeling dated and out of tune with contemporary issues.
While hardcore fans of the comics might be aghast at this shift into the future, this is probably best for the film to reach a bigger audience. Fox put together a more family friendly TV spot for James Cameron's Avatar that sells it much more like Star Wars or an animated space adventure for kids (or something like that). At first I thought this was kind of cheesy, but actually, it's kinda fun to see. So far all the marketing for Avatar has been very epic and focused towards the Cameron fanboys, but I love seeing a whole different side of Pandora this time. So it pleases me to see that Pajiba has a scoop about Will Smith taking on the lead role (as well as producing) a contemporary adaptation of the Daniel Keyes' short story and subsequent novel Flowers for Algernon, the story of Charlie, a mentally retarded man, who is the first human test subject for an experimental surgery that artificially increases intelligence.
After a successful experiment on the titular lab mouse Algernon, the surgery is then applied to Charlie, raising his IQ from 68 to 185. The Killer Inside Me is the latest film from British filmmaker Michael Winterbottom about a West Texas deputy sheriff who is slowly unmasked as a psychotic killer. Casey Affleck stars as the sheriff and is joined by Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson, Simon Baker, Elias Koteas, and Bill Pullman. I also need to warn everyone that this is a full-on 5 minute promo trailer which means it contains nudity, violence, sex, you name it. Variety announces today that Jones is next set to direct a sci-fi thriller called Source Code with Jake Gyllenhaal in negotiations to star as the main character Colter. We already know that the classic Hasbro board game, Battleship, is being adapted into a live-action feature film to be directed by Peter Berg. We know that Universal is planning on releasing it on August 5th, 2011. We know that the film will be shooting next Spring. What we didn't know, until now, however, is just who the international five-ship fleet (discussed by Berg) would be fighting. Well, according to Latino Review, we do now. Aliens. Sorry. Let me have another go at that. ALIENS! Oh yes. Sweet Zuul, yes. There's no word on what type of aliens, where they'll be from (aside from OUTER! A Single Man stars Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode, and Ginnifer Goodwin and will be hitting theaters in mid-December for a brief Oscar qualifying run. I've been waiting to see a trailer for it because I have no clue what it's about. And I've got to say, this looks phenomenal, and it's frustrating that I still haven't seen it yet. Just Emily Blunt, who plays Gwen Conliffe, that's all. Cinematical has debuted the first teaser poster for Joe Johnston's The Wolfman, which we've seen two trailers for so far. I think this is a clear sign that Universal does not know how to market this movie. Its been plagued with production problems, even reshoots, and they release two very different trailers. The decision to release a poster without even Benicio Del Toro or Anthony Hopkins on it just shows that they really don't know what they're doing. I'm sure we'll see more posters, but they won't be much better. It's called The Howling Reborn and is, supposedly, a sequel or remake or reboot of The Howling, the classic werewolf movie from 1981 that was directed by Joe Dante. That original film spawned some six sequels and created the Howling legacy. The last one, titled Howling: New Moon Rising, arrived on DVD in 1995. This is the first time we've heard of this, though that poster looks quite a bit like the original poster. Is this some straight-to-DVD rip off or something more?
The poster says that Joe Nimziki, a first-time director with only one credit on "The Outer Limits", is writing and directing The Howling Reborn. First line: "Sam's dead!" Wow, Lionsgate is really throwing everyone head first right in to the thick of this. Yahoo has debuted another new trailer for Jim Sheridan's Brothers starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, and Natalie Portman. We featured the first trailer for this back in July, but they've now released a newer, more dramatic cut (that plays like a sequel to Obsessed) to try and persuade moviegoers to see this movie in December. There's lots of screaming in the later half, but it still looks pretty good. I'll probably see this because of the cast more than anything. I just hope it's a great movie as well. Yesterday, the Sundance Institute announced that they would be launching Sundance Film Festival U.S.A., a groundbreaking initiative in which the 10-day Sundance Film Festival will expand nationwide on the night of Thursday, January 28th, 2010 to local theatres in eight cities. On that day, eight filmmakers and their films will be dispatched from Park City to cities across America, for the first time providing audiences the opportunity to experience screenings direct from the Festival in their home town art houses and to engage in live conversation with Festival artists. Now this is a really cool idea!
"The concept behind Sundance Film Festival U.S.A. is to ignite dialogue as people across the country engage in a collective film experience. It is an extension, really, of the work we have done for decades: supporting the independent voice, bringing artists to the table and inserting art more and more ...

Sony Adapting the Classic Board Game Risk as a Feature Film

What the? How the hell are they going to do this? Sony Pictures has announced today that they've acquired the rights to the classic board game Risk, which was first invented in 1957 by French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse as "La Conquête du Monde" (Conquest of the World). Two years later, in 1959, Parker Brothers published the game we all came to know as Risk. Since then, nearly a dozen different variations of Risk have mapped out epic battles in the Star Wars universe, Middle Earth, Narnia, the moon, and various periods in world history. And now Sony is planning to bring the game itself, maybe the entire world, to the big screen.
"The strategic thinking and the tactical gambles that players must take in the game are what make Risk a classic, thoroughly engaging game. Those elements translated into an action-packed, thrilling story are what will make this a uniquely exciting ...

J.J. You were probably sitting in a theater, and some random trailer started playing that had footage from a surprise birthday party for some guy named Rob. That was the start of Cloverfield. They hadn't even shot any real footage, it was a super secret project, and that first trailer captured everyone's interest. Jump ahead a few years and now J.J. Abrams is done with Star Trek. We don't yet know if he's directing the sequel and his go-to guys from Cloverfield (Matt Reeves, Drew Goddard) are both off doing other projects. So could he be working on another secret project? One called 500 Rads?
Pajiba (via SlashFilm) claims to have some information regarding this secret project. "J.J. Opening in theaters on May 28, the Mike Newell-directed video game adaptation stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley, Gemma Arterton, Alfred Molina and Toby Kebbell. In the fantasy-action-adventure, a rogue prince (Gyllenhaal) reluctantly joins forces with a mysterious princess (Arterton) and together, they race against dark forces to safeguard an ancient dagger capable of releasing the Sands of Time—a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.

Watch This: Better International Trailer for Prince of Persia

Let's give this another shot. Yesterday afternoon the official trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time hit the web. For reasons I can't understand, most people hated it, or at least said it wasn't what they expected and look terrible. Another different international trailer for Prince of Persia has popped up today (via Trailer Addict) that is shorter, but better, than that first one. For an adaptation of a video game, I think it looks awesome. It looks like it'll have plenty of badass action and I really don't mind Jake Gyllenhaal. Hopefully in time, and with better footage like this, the rest of you will warm up to Prince of Persia as well.
Watch the international trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time:

Follows a prince who must stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time ...

Interview: The Box Director Richard Kelly - Part 1: Spoiler Free

Just yesterday, at a quaint hotel in Beverly Hills, I sat down to interview Richard Kelly, the mastermind behind the upcoming film The Box and one of my all-time favorite films, Donnie Darko. We spoke at length about developing The Box and his fascination with science fiction, but because his new film has some big surprise twists, I decided to record a second part talking specifically about spoilers (that will be posted next week after this hits theaters). This half of the interview is completely spoiler free and is about everything The Box and how he got to this point in his career. If you're a fan of Richard Kelly, you need to watch this!
Watch my interview with The Box writer and director Richard Kelly:

This interview was shot using my Flip Mino camera. It's one of my favorite webcomics and is daily reading for me. It's very geeky, mainly for tech and math geeks, but it's brilliant. Simple style with big ideas. The latest comic created by Randall Munroe on xkcd.org features a series of Movie Narrative Charts that map out characters throughout an entire trilogy (specifically Lord of the Rings and Star Wars). It maps their relation (are they near or far from each other) over the horizontal axis of time. Take a look, it's pretty damn cool, you'll understand once you see it. And to top it all off, he threw in charts for 12 Angry Men and Primer as well, for a laugh. You've just got to see this!

At first I tried to follow this and make some sense of it, but eventually I realized it gets very confusing very quickly. And yet movies that barely make any money somehow get sequels that no one wants (e.g. Ghost Rider)? Well, the good news is that we probably won't see a District 9 sequel for a few years. That's good because I don't want a sequel to be rushed into production. But it's also bad because I'd actually like to see them make District 10 at some point. Over on Deadline Hollywood, Nikki Finke has a new update saying, basically, that Neill Blomkamp and Peter Jackson won't come back unless (or until) they figure out a story.
But those close to producer Peter Jackson and director Neill Blomkamp say only it may happen "at some point" when the duo "figure out what the story is and organize their respective schedules". Twitch has dug up the first trailer for Zhang Yimou's Amazing Tales: Three Guns, his remake of the Coen Brothers' first film Blood Simple. It may not have subtitles yet, but it looks quite fun anyway. And its got everything you'd expect from a Coen Brothers remake - double-crossings, cheating, lying, death, and plenty of good humor. I'm actually looking forward to this, even if it looks a bit wacky, primarily because it's Zhang Yimou and he always delivers very visually stunning films. If you have, well, watch it again. Earlier this week the official trailer for Paul Greengrass' Green Zone starring Matt Damon hit the web. It was a great trailer but most people complained that it looked too much like another Bourne movie. Later that same day an international version of the Green Zone trailer hit MSN. It's a different trailer that presents the story in a more coherent and progressive way. It still looks a bit like another Bourne movie, but it's actually a better trailer than the first. Knowing even more of the story, I'm actually more excited to see this. So how about some of the best damn horror news you'll hear all year long? Grindhouse Releasing is bringing Sam Raimi's original horror classic The Evil Dead back to the big screen next year as a midnight movie. Raimi and producers Robert Tapert and Bruce Campbell gave the go-ahead for a series of Evil Dead revival screenings taking place around the nation starting early next year. "Nothing can prepare an audience for what they are about to see, because nothing punishes an audience like Evil Dead - especially on the big screen," Bruce Campbell said. "I'm really glad it's back. Over the past week, Tom O'Neil of the LA Times' Gold Derby blog polled some 16 Oscar pundits and film critics to get an early pulse on what they think are top contenders right now for Best Picture. Those polled include well-known film critics like Erik Davis, Pete Hammond, Peter Travers, Jeff Wells, and Susan Wloszczyna. And the list of their top picks might not exactly be what you're expecting. Or maybe it is? Read on for their picks and to tell us your own!
The two films that are leading the race, according to these 16 people, are Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker and Clint Eastwood's Invictus. While this has become a dishearteningly predictable element of crime based films, what really makes or breaks films like this is the casting. In this case, I might be willing to allow cliche characters in favor of great casting as Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle have been cast as unlikely partners in director John Michael McDonagh's new film The Guard.
Gleeson plays Sergeant Gerry Boyle, a small-town Irish cop with a confrontational personality, a subversive sense of humor, a dying mother, a fondness for prostitutes, and absolutely no interest whatsoever in the international cocaine-smuggling ring that has brought straight-laced FBI agent Wendell Everett (Cheadle) to his door. However, mocking and undermining Everett's uptight ...

Orson Welles' Original War of the Worlds Broadcast Returns

With our society's extensive use of the internet, viral marketing has become an invaluable tool for movie marketing. In recent years I think it's safe to say The Dark Knight is the reigning champion for best viral marketing campaign which inspired activity from people all over the world. However, the greatest publicity stunt ever achieved goes all the way back to 1938, when Orson Welles' radio broadcast of H.G. Wells novel War of the Worlds created unparalleled panic and fear of a real alien invasion. Now, exactly 71 years later, the broadcast will return as a live stream brought to you by the upcoming film Me and Orson Wells.
The original broadcast aired as an episode of the American radio drama anthology series Mercury Theatre on the Air as part of their Halloween show. The first two thirds of the 60-minute broadcast were presented as a series of simulated news bulletins, which suggested ...

Peter Berg is Off of Dune; Paramount Wants Neill Blomkamp

As we've known for at least a year, Paramount has been trying to develop another take on Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi classic Dune, originally attaching The Kingdom director Peter Berg. Since then, we've heard off and on from Berg, including this most recent update from September where he revealed that it would be a PG-13 "massive epic," which was a step in the right direction. Movie blog Pajiba is now reporting that Berg has left the project and "his Film 44 production company backed out." Now Paramount is scrambling to find a new director." According to them, District 9's Neill Blomkamp is one of only two alternatives.
The first question is why this blog would be reporting on Dune. Well, apparently there was a rumor in the summer that Robert Pattinson (ugh) was being considered for one of the lead roles, and they confirmed in their update that this stemmed from ...

Must Watch: Great Trailer for John Lennon Biopic Nowhere Boy

I didn't expect we'd see a trailer for this film this quickly, but alas, here it is. The first trailer for Sam Taylor-Wood's Nowhere Boy, the biopic about a young John Lennon, has debuted on YouTube (via The Playlist). This actually looks fantastic, even better than I was expecting. It definitely seems like Taylor-Wood made the right choice picking Aaron Johnson to play Lennon and I'm also impressed by how quickly the young Thomas Sangster has grown up. He looks a lot older in this as Paul McCartney than he did in Love Actually. Whether you're a fan of The Beatles or not, I suggest you watch this trailer anyway. This is the first we've heard about this project since the first photo arrived last July. And surprisingly it looks a lot better than I was expecting. I guess I should trust in Paul Greengrass - he usually always delivers a solid action film, especially when paired with Matt Damon (hint, hint). Anyway, this trailer has now made Green Zone one of my most anticipated movies to see next March, so be sure to check it out!
Watch the official trailer for Paul Greengrass' Green Zone:

You can also watch the Green Zone trailer in High Definition on Yahoo
About a pair of CIA agents (Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear) on the trail of Weapons of Mass ...

Finally, An Official Theatrical Sherlock Holmes Poster Appears

Finally! I say that because Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes hits theaters in two months and we haven't seen a real poster besides the character one-sheets released in June and the never-used one from ShoWest. I was hoping I'd be able to say they fixed the proportions of Robert Downey Jr's head on this new poster (via Cinematical), but I was wrong, as his head on this poster looks just as weird as it did before. Besides that though, I'm digging the style of this, especially with all the other "trinkets" along the sides. Although I'm not sure about that tagline either: "Holmes for the Holiday." Really? This marks the first time that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's yearly gala has had a real host since 1995! No pressure whatsoever, Mr. Gervais.
I've wanted to Gervais to host a gig like this for some time now because whenever he's presented at these awards shows, he brings a motherload of hilarity (click either of those for examples). According to Ain't It Cool News, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang screenwriter Shane Black will be writing a Doc Savage script for Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Eagle Eye, Star Trek) to produce. Harry Knowles ran into Shane at a party recently in Austin and was told by Black that "he is preparing to write the script." Apparently a Doc Savage movie has been in development for a long time without much real progress, but with Black on-board working on a new screenplay, and with Kurtzman/Orci producing, it may actually get somewhere this time.
Harry also asked Black if they were modernizing the character. Shane's response was that "the character can not be separated from the 30s." He also added that, "he has decided that Doc needs to have his Fabulous Five. If you're unsure of what exactly that means, like I was at first, just check out this trailer and you'll completely understand. Russ from SlashFilm recently pointed out this trailer for That Evening Sun that stars Hal Holbrook, Ray McKinnon, and Mia Wasikowska (who plays Alice in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland). It looks like Hal Holbrook can still deliver an oustanding performance. I was moved by his work in Into the Wild and it looks like this will be great thanks to him as well. Anyway, I've said enough, just watch this.
Watch the official trailer for Scott Teems' That Evening Sun:
[flv:http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/thateveningsun-tlr_h480p.flv http://media2.firstshowing.net/firstshowing/thateveningsun-tlr_h480p.jpg 598 248]
You can also watch the That Evening Sun trailer in High Definition on Apple
An aging Tennessee farmer named Abner Meecham (Hal Holbrook) returns to his homestead ...

Mad Max 4: Fury Road Confirmed, Budget of $100 Million!

This is the weekend that Mad Max is making its return. Yesterday morning a rumor hit saying that Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy were director George Miller's top choices to star in Mad Max 4. Later in the day, THR published a story confirming that Mad Max 4, now officially titled Fury Road, was actually already ready to go into production in Sydney and in New South Wales next year. They did not confirm any of the actors, but did mention that the budget would be close to $100 million, despite having no studio funding or backing for the project. That is some impressive indie financing. Obviously the locals rule in Australia.
One of the local papers has a few quotes from Miller saying that Fury Road will put New South Wales back on the map as a filmmaking destination. "The Mad Max films are iconic," NSW Premier Rees said. "In ...

Stallone is Going to Make Rocky 7 After Finishing Rambo 5

Damn you Sly Stallone! There's a story making its way around the web right now that features a few new quotes from Sylvester Stallone that say that he just announced that he'll be going back to playing Rocky Balboa yet again in Rocky 7. Apparently Stallone was talking with Tele 5 in Germany and the quotes ended up online at places like TeenSay.co.uk (via SlashFilm). We already know that Sly is now finishing up The Expendables, due for release next August, and got a greenlight from Nu Image to make Rambo 5 next year. If all this is to be believed, then he'll follow that up yet with Rocky 7, presumably in late 2010 or early 2011.
"I know I'll probably make a fool of myself if I make another 'Rocky' film after turning 60."
"I also know there's gonna be a lot of criticism. Yea, I'm still a bit bewildered by that, but it's being cleared up today, finally. Paste (via SlashFilm) just did an interview with Mastodon recently and got the full story, including that they're not dropping any all-out heavy metal tracks into the movie, but rather recording instrumental songs that will be integrated into the score, similar to how Linkin Park worked with Steve Jablonsky for the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen score. It's actually kind of fascinating to hear and I'm much more excited to hear their score knowing this.
The story is that Jonah Hex director Jimmy Hayward called up Mastodon saying he is a huge fan and that it was their album Blood Mountain that inspired him while writing the script. The band came to LA following their European tour and recorded ...

Rumor: DiCaprio & Maguire Are Remaking The Third Man?

Another rumor to chew over this fine Friday afternoon. CHUD is reporting that Canal+ from France is gearing up to remake Carol Reed's 1949 classic The Third Man that starred Orson Welles and Bernard Lee. Apparently none other than Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire are already cast and helping develop the project. While they say it doesn't have a director yet, the screenplay is being written by Steven Knight, of Dirty Pretty Things and Eastern Promises. Sounds like a lot of great talent, but of course, is a remake of The Third Man even necessary or desired? It's a true noir classic that really can't be topped.
The Third Man is a noir mystery set in Austria's capital city Vienna, devastated and recovering from the World War II. An American pulp writer arrives in Vienna only to find that the friend who waited for him is killed under mysterious circumstances. Yahoo has debuted the official poster for Clint Eastwood's Invictus, which stars Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as rugby player Francois Pienaar. We're not sure when the first trailer will hit (probably later this week), but I'm just as excited to see this poster, mainly because Invictus is the last big Oscar wildcard. Most Oscar pundits are saying that Invictus might end up the big Best Picture winner, but they're saying that without having seen a single frame of footage. This poster looks great, so at least they're off to a good start. This trailer is considerably different from the first trailer from July, featuring less dialogue, one contemporary rock song running throughout, and a focus more on the monster and the intensity (and less on the story). I just really hope this is going to be rated R in the end, because after watching this trailer, I want as intense of a frickin' Wolfman movie as I can get. Considering I've loved just about every movie that Hugo Weaving has been in as well, I expect to love this one, too.
